Castro Urges for More Resources and Capacity for the Texas Workforce Commission

WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, and member of the House Intelligence and Education and Labor Committees, today released the following statement after urging Governor Greg Abbott to provide the necessary funding to invest more resources and capacity into the Texas Workforce Commission who is tasked with unemployment insurance matters during this crisis:

“As thousands of Texans lose their jobs through no fault of their own, Governor Abbott must improve the effectiveness of the Texas Workforce Commissions’ (TWC) response to workers in need. Congress is providing $88 million in support for the TWC as they serve Texas workers during the coronavirus pandemic. But we expect more urgent action. Too many Texans have been unable to get the unemployment benefits they need just to make ends meet. TWC needs more staff and resources to get the job done for every Texas worker who seeks assistance. There is no time to waste.”
